What is fsy?

Fire Station Yoga is your yoga community.

The Fire Station is not only a physical place to practice, but also a safe and supportive environment that fosters connection and mutual growth. In short, this is a space to light and fan your inner flame, whatever that means for you.

Wherever and whenever we practice, all levels are encouraged and celebrated.

FREQUENTLY Asked Questions

Do I need to sign up in advance?

Nope!

As a small town studio, we have never had to turn anyone away from a class due to capacity constraints.

Please arrive about 10 minutes prior to your first class to fill out our waiver form. Be sure to let your instructor know about any injuries and feel free to ask any questions you may have about the class, the studio or yoga in general.

NOTE! Workshops are the only exception to this rule. Pre-registration is required to ensure everyone has access to necessary props, handouts, etc. Visit our workshops page for details or to sign up.

What should I bring?

  • YOGA MAT

  • TOWEL

  • WATER BOTTLE

  • PAYMENT (Cash or Venmo @firestationyoga)

We encourage regular yogis to provide their own equipment. We do have a limited number of yoga mats available to borrow if you are a first-time yogi or are visiting from out of town. Mats are thoroughly sanitized after each use.

A water cooler is available to fill your water bottle, as needed.

Which classes are best for first-time yogis?

BEGINNERS ARE WELCOME AT ALL PRACTICES!

Remember, this is your yoga community! We pride ourselves on welcoming one and all to any class. Just let your instructor know that you’re new to yoga, and they will make sure you have all the guidance you need.

Still looking for a recommendation of where to start? Practices marked as ☀️+🧊 (WARM & UNHEATED) tend to be slower paced and allow more time to become familiar with the correct alignment and names of the postures.

how should I prepare?

🧘🏾 DRESS FOR SUCCESS: Comfort is key! Wear something that you can move in and are willing to drip on. If you’re attending a hot or warm class, you will sweat. In honor of our space, please leave shoes outside of the yoga room. You may practice barefoot (recommended) or with socks. Unisex changing stalls are available just outside the yoga room.

💧HYDRATE BEFORE & AFTER: It takes up to 90 minutes for your body to digest fluids, so be sure to hydrate before you arrive. Heated classes get sweaty! After you practice, be sure to replenish lost fluids and salts with electrolytes (aka have a banana!).

🚻 RESTROOM ON GROUND FLOOR: Our amazing fire station was built in the 1880s as a brewery and converted to a fire station in 1928. The only restroom is located on the 1st floor, and the practice room is on the 3rd floor. So… do yourself a favor! Hit the restroom on the way up because it’s a long, COLD hike once you’re sweaty!

is there any other studio etiquette?

This space has been created to create space!

  • 📵 NO CELL PHONES: Please keep phones on silent and refrain from using them (for talk or text) inside the practice room. You deserve a chance to reset, so do this for yourself.

  • 🤫 OBSERVE SILENCE: Please observe silence as much as possible in the practice room, especially before and during class. Be mindful of other students who may want to rest on their mats before and after practice.

  • 👃AVOID PERFUMES: Please refrain from wearing strong perfumes or lotions, as they may trigger a neighboring yogi.

  • 🦶SHOES OFF: As noted above, we request that shoes are left outside the practice room. You may bring valuables into the room, and we provide cubbies for storage. However, we ask that cell phones remain stored and on silent.

  • 🌈 NAMASTE: The Fire Station is a place of acceptance and love. All are welcome here!

What is the benefit of heated yoga?

🔥fire = transformation🔥

Heat transforms the body. Practicing in a heated space promotes cellular turnover, cardiovascular health, and detoxification through sweat. Heat naturally softens muscles and tissues (imagine a stick of butter in a 95 degree room), which in turn facilitates increased mobility.

Heat transforms the mind. By creating a mental challenge to meet and overcome, heat increases our mental fortitude and focus each time we step onto our mats.

Icons on schedule indicate the target temperature of each class (actual temperature may vary):

  • Unheated 🧊=72 degrees

  • Warm ☀️=80 degrees

  • Hot 🔥=95+ degrees

how does fsy limit the spread of illness?

🏠 STAY HOME: First and foremost, please STAY HOME if you have ANY symptoms of illness.

🧼 SANITIZE: Our space is deeply sanitized before and after each practice. We also encourage all yogis to help us limit the potential spread of infection by practicing good personal hygiene - wash hands, disinfect your equipment, use hand sanitizer, etc.

👂LISTEN TO YOUR BODY: As always, listen to your body and be sure to hydrate in advance. If you opt to wear a mask, it will intensify the cardiovascular challenge of your practice, so give yourself some extra grace.

🙋🏽 ASK QUESTIONS: If you have any further questions, email info@thefirestation.yoga or your instructor is always happy to chat with you personally.
